What you should know
JPEG has been the default photographic format since the early nineties and it is still perfectly good. WebP simply encodes the same information more efficiently. Google’s own comparisons put the saving at 25 to 34 percent against JPEG at equivalent quality, and in practice on product photography and blog imagery that is about what you see.
That saving compounds. A product listing page with thirty thumbnails at 120KB each is 3.6MB of images; the same page in WebP is closer to 2.5MB. Largest Contentful Paint improves, mobile users on metered connections spend less, and nothing about the design has to change.
One caution worth stating plainly: converting an already-compressed JPEG to WebP means the image goes through lossy compression twice. The result is still smaller and still looks fine at sensible quality settings, but if you have the original camera file or an export from your design tool, convert from that instead. You will get a better image at the same file size.
Questions people ask
How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
Around 25 to 35 percent at matching visual quality for typical photographic content. The saving is larger on images with flat areas and smaller on very noisy or highly detailed ones.
Will converting reduce quality?
The image is re-encoded, so strictly there is some loss. At quality 80 and above it is not visible at normal viewing size. If the file is already a heavily compressed JPEG, use a higher setting to avoid compounding artefacts.
Can I resize while converting?
Yes. Set a target width or height and the images are resized before encoding, which is the right order and saves you a second pass through another tool.
Is EXIF data kept?
No. Re-encoding drops EXIF, so camera details, timestamps and GPS location do not travel with the converted file. That is usually what you want for images going on a public website.
Images are one line item
Compressing them is the cheap half of page speed. If the rest of the site is still slow, or the traffic is not converting once it arrives, that is the part we actually get paid for.
